M1.2 Research Project: A Speculative approach to a Near Future world with Invasive Neurotechnology
Abstract
Neurotechnologies have been developed for both medical applications, such as aiding speech difficulties and missing limbs, as well as for human enhancement, such as visual prosthesis and consensual mental telepathy. Despite the many possibilities, studies show that these emerging Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technologies pose risk to our individual freedom and autonomy in the future. This paper aims to explore experiences associated with emerging invasive BCI technologies, using speculative design. Values from transhumanism, the Quantified Self were translated into diegetic artefact and background story of a future world in which invasive neurotechnology is commercially available. From this starting point, possibilities, dangers and societal consequences of this future were explored in focus groups. Individual, interactive and societal themes have been de- rived from the focus groups and visualised in an interaction framework. The outcome of the research is 6 specific user cases that show experiences and fears of emerging BCI technology in more detail.
